Custom Vs. Precat Soap Niches

Are you building a custom tile Bath tub or shower? If so, you need to think about what type of soap niche you want. You can have your soap niche built directly into the wall, And then have the tile installed directly around it. Or, you can buy a precast niche that is much easier to install. This article compares both approaches, explaining the pros and cons of each.

Custom Soap Niches Are Seamless and Sleek

Custom soap shower niches can be seamless and sleek and they are properly built. Since the exact same tile is used, you can keep the same pattern uninterrupted right into your niche. If you're having a professional build your shower, they should be able to do the work properly. However, if you are doing your own tiling, perfecting this can be a little tricky. The most important thing is that the tile on the lower edge (often called the sill), slopes downward. This prevents water from puddling up send the niche and creating problems. If the water is not draining properly, you're going to have more issues with soap scum buildup.

Another important thing to consider when building custom nieces is the grout lines. You want to have as few grout lines as possible within the niche,  especially on the bottom edge. Of course, this depends on the size of your tiles. It will also require some detailed planning to make sure the grout lines line up perfectly with the niche.

Precast Niches are More Convenient

Installing a precast niche is going to be more affordable and convenient. First of all, they are already sloped to allow optimal water drainage. Second of all, since they're made out of one solid piece of tile, you don't need to worry about any problems with the grout lines.

Perhaps the biggest issue with precast niche is finding a product that matches. There are obviously a limited amount styles available. Finding a product with the right color is hard enough. But, when you consider that you also need to match the style, texture, insights, it can't be very difficult. This is why it is probably a good idea to look at the precast options after you have decided on the tile you are going to use. You want to make your decision before you make any structural reinforcements to the wall where the niche will be installed.

Both options can be stylish, you just want to make sure you choose for your shower.
